Doris Kuhlmann-Wilsdorf received the Ph.D. degree in physics and materials science from Göttingen University, Göttingen, Germany, in 1947, the D.Sc. degree from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1954, and the D.Sc. degree from the University of Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa, in 2004. From 1949 to 1950 she conducted post-doctoral research in Bristol, U.K. She successively served on the faculties of the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa; the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia; and until her 2004 retirement, at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. She has published widely in materials science and holds about a dozen patents. She is the owner/president of the start-up company KWM LLC (Kuhlmann-Wilsdorf Motors) that is dedicated to the development of “multipolar” motors and generators of her invention.,Dr. Kuhlmann-Wilsdorf received a number of honors. She is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
